Toronto ON — Just a puppy when Brendan Shanahan was hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs to rebuild the team in what was dubbed “the Shanaplan”, Rocky is now turning 50. Seven human years in, Rocky is still waiting for a playoff series win and is beginning to feel doubtful he will ever see it happen.
For the first 21 years, there was an expected learning curve and losing was expected. It was a little easier back then because everything was new and he was busy trying to master the whole paw shaking thing and getting used to all the new smells. By age 28 the whole stick and ball thing was fun but getting old and the Leafs had yet to sniff a second round playoff series.
Now at 50 and the season beginning in 21 weeks in dog time, it’s quite clear this is a do or die 7 year stretch for Rocky. His family are always on their phone, he still has 30 year old toy because the family thinks it’s cute and the white ground and cold feet are coming. He’s been a good boy for a long time and it’s time for it to pay off.
