Ottawa ON — It’s been twelve long months since their last raise, but with the COVID 19 pandemic increasing the cost of living, the Prime Minister and MP’s of Canada have felt it the most. For too many months this year, other frontline workers got temporary raises while our frontline government officials have had to fend for themselves. They did get at least a $2000 raise last April but that was spread out over 365 days.
Frontline elected officials have not been given the same respect as other frontline workers such as doctors, nurses and retail workers. As an example, Prime Minister Trudeau bravely walked down the six steps of Rideau Cottage every day for his daily briefings in the beginning. Over the course of a year that adds up to several thousand steps. He never complained once.
On April 1st, they will finally be paid their dues and get a much needed pay increase. According to the CTF, the Prime Minister is expected to get a $6400 raise which barely covers the cost of restoring the marble countertops. If you think that’s not enough, MP’s will only be getting $3200 and ministers will get $4700. You can’t just walk into any Canadian Tire and buy Audi parts so many MP’s are one pothole away from having to buy a Dodge.
When April 1st kicks in, remember that even though they just got a raise don’t be afraid to put a sign outside your closed business to thank a frontline Member of Parliament.
